With the pain we’ve all been feeling at the pump recently, there’s never been a better time to reevaluate what we truly need from a vehicle. If your list of must-haves includes stylish good looks, a comfortable interior, cool features, decent fuel economy, and a healthy dose of utility, we’d suggest you have a look at the all-new 2009 Nissan Murano.
With its latest redesign, Nissan’s midsize crossover is offered in three trim levels including the entry-level S, well-equipped SL, and top-of-the-line LE. Like all Muranos, the 265-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine in the loaded LE model we drove offered plenty of punch, complimented by smoother shifts from the new continuously-variable automatic transmission (CVT). Ride and handling are on par with most models in this segment, though you should keep in mind the Murano’s suspension is set up more for comfort than enthusiastic motoring.
Given its refined driving character, the Murano’s comfortable interior should come as no surprise. Styling and material quality has been noticeably improved and the number of sought-after features broadened, including a dual-panel sunroof/rear skylight combo, a navigation system with real-time traffic information, and a rearview camera.
Some may consider the fact that the interior lacks a third-row seat and offers slightly less cargo volume than some of its competitors to be disadvantages, but not us. Instead we think of this new Murano as right-sized; a stylish, practical, and more fuel efficient alternative to the big thirsty SUVs at a time when those qualities have never been more important.
Strengths:
More power under the hood
Upgraded interior with plenty of desirable features and options
Healthy 3500-pound towing capacity
Weaknesses:
Offers just two rows of seating when three are becoming the norm
Less cargo room than competitors
Pricey premium fuel recommended
Bottom Line:
Big on style, comfort, and features, but a bit light on utility.

Base Price: $26,870
As Tested: $40,250

Electronic stability control
